About the Author

I am a PhD student in the Ecological Anthropology program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

I first came to Japan in 1999 as an exchange student in Osaka. I came again in 2002 to work as an English teacher in Azumino, Nagano. After two years in Nagano I moved to Kyoto, where I lived for a year after marrying my wife.

Since October 2007 I've been in Japan conducting dissertation research under the auspices of Kyoto University. From April 2008 I've been living in Otaki, Nagano where I am conducting fieldwork.

My research focuses on local responses to forest landscape change within the modern Japanese state, and seeks to discover new structures for localized management of forest resources.
